Girl, 10, dies after being turned away from hospital

A 10-YEAR-OLD girl with a congenital heart disease allegedly died on July 16 as she was denied access to a private hospital in Butuan City.
Tutz Salarda-Chan, the grieving mother of the girl named Jannari, shared on her Facebook account how her daughter died after being turned away by an admission staff of the Butuan Doctors Hospital (BDH).
"We arrived at Butuan Doctors Hospital around 8 p.m., rushing to admission desk, running for my daughter's life only to be rejected simply because my available cash on hand was only around P8,000 to 10, 000 and they demanded for P30,000 deposit on the very hour," Chan said.
Before rushing her daughter in the hospital, Chan said that Jannari was first confined last July 13 at San Francisco Doctors Hospital (FDH) in Agusan del Sur. Chan said that Jannari was properly monitored and cared by the hospital personnel in FDH.
However, Chan said they needed to transfer her daughter to the BDH due to her critical condition. She said they believed that Jannari would get a better medical treatment at the Butuan City-based medical facility as it is well equipped.
Aside from congestive heart failure, Jannari was also diagnosed of diabetes with kidney problem, Chan said.
On July 15, Jannari was transferred in Butuan City in an ambulance accompanied by the two nurses from FDH, Chan said.
The ambulance arrived in BDH for more than an hour, but instead of warmth assistance of the hospital, an admission desk staff demanded Chan to give full payment before admitting her daughter.
"Your money is less than P30,000. That's not enough. The hospital is not even a charity," the staff, whose name was not known, said.
"You've been on your way here, yet, you were not able to transact money?" the staff allegedly added.
Despite of the offensive reaction of the hospital personnel, Chan alleged managed to speak to her and said, "Miss, my daughter is intubated and needs to be admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU). It's really an emergency."
The admission desk staff still declined to accommodate her daughter as she was claiming that the deposit in the ICU should be P30,000.
Chan was forced to relocate Jannari to a hospital in Davao City since they could not convince the admission personnel in the Butuan hospital. However, her daughter died before reaching their destination.
"I can't describe and express how we felt at that time. It was really so painful, and still is, it's so hard to lose a member on your family especially when it is your daughter," Chan said.
The Butuan Doctors Hospital refused to comment on the issue.
Meanwhile, netizens showed their sympathy to the loss of the bereaved family and hoped that they will get the justice for Jannari.
A post said that she could imagine Jannari's painful ordeal because she was like an "angel" to suffer the agonies of maltreatment of some "insensitive and cold blooded" individuals.
"Condolences. Just be strong, Tutz, and keep the faith," a comment in Chan's post said.
A netizen said the wrong move of the Butuan hospital is a "shame".
